Gangdong-gu Hosts 3·1 Movement Commemoration Event in Sangil-ri

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Gangdong-gu (Mayor Lee Jeong-hoon) will hold the 'Sangil-ri March 1st Movement Commemoration Event' at 11 a.m. on March 25 at 'Sangil-ri Manse Square' (511 Sangil-dong).

This event was organized to shed new light on the historical fact that on March 27, 1919, over 1,000 residents from the Gwangju-gun area held a Manse (Long Live) protest in front of the Sangil-ri Military Police Station, the old name of Sangil-dong, Gucheon-myeon, Gangdong-gu, and to honor the noble spirit of the patriotic martyrs and independence activists.

The commemoration event will begin with the unveiling ceremony of Sangil-ri Manse Square, followed by ▲ commemorative tree planting ▲ national salute and a moment of silence for the patriotic martyrs ▲ introduction of guests and progress report ▲ screening of interview videos with descendants of independence activists ▲ awarding of merit certificates and letters of appreciation ▲ commemorative performance (chorus) ▲ Manse movement performance. The event will evoke the emotions of that era by reenacting the shouts of that day along with a medley of independence army songs.

The district expects this event to serve as an opportunity to reflect on the passionate patriotism of the patriotic martyrs and to inform residents about the independence movement that took place in Gangdong-gu.

Previously, to publicize the historical significance of the Manse movement carried out in Sangil-ri and to inherit and develop its spirit, the district established 'Sangil-ri Manse Square' in the area of 511 Sangil-dong in March 2022, and in August last year, enacted an ordinance concerning the Sangil-ri March 1st Manse Movement commemoration project, laying the groundwork for promoting the commemorative project.

Lee Jeong-hoon, Mayor of Gangdong-gu, said, "This event was prepared to reflect on the meaning of the March 1st Movement, which arose for the nation's independence," and added, "I hope it will be a precious time to honor their noble spirit and at the same time raise pride."
