[Asia Economy Reporter Na Ye-eun] A Holocaust survivor who survived four Nazi concentration camps during World War II has died due to Russian shelling.
On the 22nd (local time), according to CNN, the Buchenwald Concentration Camp Memorial, a former Nazi German Jewish camp, announced that Boris Romanchenko (96) died on the 18th due to a Russian airstrike.
The memorial stated, "Our friend Boris, who survived four camps including Buchenwald, Peenem?nde, Dora, and Bergen-Belsen, died from shelling at his home in Kharkiv."
Romanchenko was reported to be the last surviving Holocaust victim from Kharkiv, Ukraine. According to the memorial, Romanchenko was dedicated to ensuring the world remembers Nazi crimes and served as the vice chairman of the Buchenwald-Dora International Committee.
Romanchenko’s granddaughter, Yulia Romanchenko, told CNN, "I learned through social media that there was shelling where my grandfather lived," adding, "I asked the residents if my grandfather was okay, and they sent me videos of my grandfather’s house burned down."
She continued, "After learning this, I tried to go to my grandfather’s house immediately, but there was a curfew," and lamented, "When I arrived later, my grandfather’s house was completely burned down. Nothing remained?not the windows, balconies, or anything."
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba wrote on Twitter about Romanchenko’s death, calling it "an unspeakable death," and stated, "He survived Hitler but was killed by Putin."
