Park Kyum-soo, Mayor of Gangbuk-gu, participated on the 21st in the ‘No oversized packaging gift acceptance and purchase challenge’ to reduce packaging waste.
This challenge is a campaign started with the purpose of reducing packaging waste and disposable product use in daily life to practice waste reduction and ultimately realize a carbon-neutral circular economy.
The challenge proceeds in a relay style where participants take a certification photo with a placard made from recycled materials such as the back of cardboard boxes or scrap paper and then nominate the next person.
Mayor Park Kyum-soo of Gangbuk-gu said, “I thank Mayor Lee Seung-ro of Seongbuk-gu for nominating me as a participant to join this meaningful challenge,” and added, “Our Gangbuk-gu will actively participate in the challenge of not accepting or buying oversized packaging gifts to reduce waste.” He also said, “Due to the prolonged COVID-19 situation, a large amount of disposable products are being generated from deliveries and packaging, causing serious environmental pollution,” and urged, “I ask all residents to join in reducing disposable products for carbon neutrality and environmental protection.”
Mayor Park Kyum-soo nominated Moon Seok-jin, Mayor of Seodaemun-gu, Kim Mi-kyung, Mayor of Eunpyeong-gu, and Baek Gun-gi, Mayor of Yongin City, as the next participants.
Lee Seung-ro, Mayor of Seongbuk-gu, joined the relay campaign ‘No oversized packaging gift acceptance and purchase’ on the 21st.
This challenge was declared on January 15 by the Safety Culture Education Center to reduce the use of oversized packaging products, practice waste reduction, and realize a carbon-neutral circular economy in daily life, with participation from local governments nationwide.
Mayor Lee delivered the campaign message, “Let’s participate together in not accepting or buying oversized packaging gifts!” encouraging residents’ active participation and announcing his commitment to reduce oversized packaging products in daily life. He also appealed, “Due to the impact of COVID-19, the use of disposable products has surged, causing serious environmental pollution. For carbon neutrality, small personal actions in daily life are very important,” and urged, “Please actively join in eradicating oversized packaging gifts.”
Having been nominated by Mayor Noh Hyun-song of Gangseo-gu, Mayor Lee Seung-ro nominated Yoo Jin-seop, Mayor of Jeongeup City, Kim Il-young, Chairperson of Seongbuk-gu Council, and Park Kyum-soo, Mayor of Gangbuk-gu, as the next participants.
Yoo Dong-gyun, Mayor of Mapo-gu, awarded the ‘Citizen Commendation for Outstanding Traditional Market Workers’ to 11 outstanding workers at the traditional markets on the 22nd in the large conference room on the 8th floor of Mapo-gu Office.
The district selected awardees by receiving recommendations of traditional market workers who contributed to the development of traditional markets from six market merchant associations and five shopping district merchant associations within the region.
Mayor Yoo Dong-gyun of Mapo-gu expressed gratitude, saying, “Despite the difficulties faced by traditional markets due to COVID-19, thanks to the merchants’ efforts in self-quarantine activities, citizens were able to safely use the markets.”
