When Using Domestic Flights at Airports Nationwide
Biometric Authentication Registration as an Alternative to ID Cards
[Asia Economy Reporter Cha Min-young] From now on, when using domestic flights, identity verification will be easily possible through the mobile driver's license verification service within the three major telecom companies' 'PASS' app.
The three telecom companies announced on the 22nd that they will make the 'PASS Mobile Driver's License Verification Service,' Korea's first digital official ID, available for use at airports nationwide.
The three telecom companies and Korea Airports Corporation will provide the 'PASS Mobile Driver's License Verification Service' as an alternative means of ID for biometric authentication registration during domestic flight check-in at airports nationwide. This is the first time that a mobile ID has been introduced in a form that is verified through a computerized system at airports.
Korea Airports Corporation has been operating the Bio-authentication One ID identity verification service since 2018 to resolve passenger inconvenience caused by not carrying an ID during domestic flight check-in. Previously, an ID such as a resident registration card or driver's license was required for initial registration, but now the 'PASS Mobile Driver's License Verification Service' can be used instead of a physical ID.
Meanwhile, the three telecom companies and Korea Airports Corporation, together with multiple airlines, are jointly developing the next step of applying the PASS Mobile Driver's License Verification Service: the 'Smart Boarding Pass' service, which combines mobile boarding passes with mobile driver's licenses. They are preparing to apply this service not only for airport gate access but also across airport services such as duty-free shops and unmanned vending machines.
The three telecom companies plan to pioneer the 'mobile ID' service sector by preparing to enhance the security of the PASS Mobile Driver's License Verification Service in the first half of this year.
