[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] President Moon Jae-in mourned on the 18th the passing of Admiral Robert L. J. Loney of the U.S. Navy, known as the hero of the "Hungnam Evacuation Operation," stating, "The ROK-U.S. alliance is a blood alliance forged through the sacrifices of war veterans."


On the same day, President Moon posted a tribute message on social networking services (SNS), saying, "I extend my condolences to the family and comrades who are grieving the Admiral's death."


President Moon said, "The ROK-U.S. alliance is a blood alliance forged through the sacrifices of war veterans, and at its foundation lies the steadfast trust of our people," adding, "The devoted actions of the SS Meredith Victory during the urgent evacuation operation, saving many civilian refugees, deeply moved our people and the entire world."


He continued, "My parents were also able to evacuate together at that time, so personally, I am deeply grateful."


Admiral Loney, as the chief mate of the cargo ship Meredith Victory, participated in the Hungnam Evacuation Operation and is well known for rescuing over 14,000 refugees. President Moon said, "The voyage of the Meredith Victory is why it is called the great 'Christmas Miracle,' and it represents the most humanitarian hope amid the tragedy of the Korean War."
