Spring Round for Golf Beginners "The Keyword is Jeongta (正打)"... What to Prepare?

Considering Temperature Differences for Warmth Focus, Sufficient Stretching, Practice Green Check, Avoiding Hazard Areas, Effective 'Running Approach' Selection

Spring Round for Golf Beginners "The Keyword is Jeongta (正打)"... What to Prepare? Spring rounds for golf beginners require a differentiated strategy that focuses on solid hits while avoiding penalty areas.

[Asia Economy Kim Hyunjun, Golf Specialist Reporter] "The keyword is solid contact."

Due to the impact of COVID-19, the number of golf beginners (Golf + children) has actually surged over the past two years. This is because golf courses are perceived as relatively safe. In fact, the influx rate of new golfers has sharply increased, with 10.5% in 2020 and 12.7% last year. It is interesting that among golfers with less than three years of experience, nearly 65% are in their 20s to 40s. Nowadays, practice facilities such as screen golf are popping up all over urban areas, making it easier to start golf.

Anyone stepping onto the course for the first time is bound to be captivated by the vast charm of nature. However, actual rounds are not easy. The list of things to prepare is extensive: masks, tees, plenty of golf balls, sunscreen, rain gear, umbrellas, windbreakers, and more. The focus is on staying warm. Temperature differences between day and night are still large, and when the wind blows, the perceived temperature drops sharply. Most golf courses in Korea are located in mountainous terrain, making them 2 to 3 degrees colder than urban areas.

Layering thin clothes is perfect. This is to avoid interference with the swing. If it gets hot, you can take layers off. Miscellaneous items should be packed in the golf bag in advance. Arrive at the clubhouse at least one hour early and start stretching. Insufficient warm-up can strain the lower back, elbows, and ankles. Checking the practice green is essential, especially during the course aeration period. Gauge the green speed, which varies from course to course.

Golf courses are vast. Unlike driving ranges, setting targets is difficult, and there are uneven slopes, lakes, deep roughs, and bunkers lurking everywhere. Above all, aiming is crucial. Properly aiming at the target makes the next step easier. At least for the first few holes, play while walking and carefully check the ball’s lie on the fairway. Divots or bare ground can cause fatal mishits such as topping or hitting behind the ball.

Most importantly, accurate contact is key. You need to hit forward to reach the green. Beginners tend to use hybrids. Grip lower on the club and use a three-quarter swing to tap the ball; this covers most distances. Always avoid penalty areas. Iron shots are punch shots with the ball positioned slightly to the right. For the short game, a running approach using a pitching wedge is effective. The 'Texas wedge shot,' which uses a putter instead of a wedge near the green, is also cost-effective.
