[Asia Economy Reporter Minyoung Cha] ‘Apple Developer Academy,’ the first of its kind in Korea, established in Pohang, opened its doors to online classes on the 14th.

Due to COVID-19, the initial 9-month course started remotely and will later be conducted in-person at Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH). The number of students for the first academic year, 2022, is 200.

The Apple Developer Academy operates five days a week. The curriculum consists of coding, design, Apple application (app) business and marketing, specialized skills, and processes, and also offers a multidisciplinary framework covering Apple-related technologies and processes.

Gordon Schukwit, head of the Apple Developer Academy, said, “We are pleased to open Korea’s first Apple Developer Academy in collaboration with POSTECH to support the next generation of developers and entrepreneurs in Korea,” adding, “The App Store ecosystem is an engine for creativity and economic development, and we hope the 200 inaugural academy students will create apps that change new businesses and the world with their creative abilities.”

Kim Ji-kyung, one of the first students of the Apple Developer Academy, said, “While studying life sciences and considering my career path, I became very interested in iOS development, Apple’s operating system, but I felt a big gap between university classes and the actual development field,” and added, “Apple’s educational curriculum is necessary, but I look forward to growing together through collaboration with students from different environments.”

Kim In-seop, who has worked as a sound engineer and guitarist and joined the Developer Academy to explore new forms of expression through app development, said, “I was encouraged to apply after watching an interview with a Brazilian Developer Academy participant who was a band musician,” and added, “I believe this program can create new value through the synergy of ideas from diverse people.”

Kim Moo-hwan, president of POSTECH, said, “We warmly welcome the first students of Korea’s Apple Developer Academy, operated jointly by the leading global company Apple and POSTECH even amid the pandemic,” and expressed his commitment, “We will actively support the 200 talented individuals with potential to grow into leaders who can contribute to the development of the country and community through nine months of learning.”

Meanwhile, the Apple Developer Academy operates in more than 12 locations worldwide, including Detroit, USA, and Italy. Graduates of the Apple Developer Academy have released over 1,500 apps on the App Store and founded a total of 160 startups to date.
