[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Jungnang-gu (District Mayor Ryu Gyeong-gi), which has the largest number of sewing companies (2,491) among Seoul's autonomous districts, accounting for 12% of Seoul's total sewing industry, is accelerating the revitalization of its representative industry, the fashion sewing industry, through various support projects.
The sewing industry in Jungnang-gu plays an important role in the local economy, accounting for about 73% of the total manufacturing industry, making support and development of the fashion sewing industry necessary.
To this end, a fashion sewing cluster is being established in the Myeonmok Fashion Specific Development Promotion District. The cluster consists of a smart anchor as a production and collaboration space, a comprehensive information center (supporting startups, education, and information), and an aggregation center (for startups and sales space), aiming to establish a one-stop production system as the largest production base for the domestic sewing industry.
The fashion sewing shared equipment room, utilizing the old government building, is equipped with a state-of-the-art automatic cutting system and has been in full operation since January. The automatic cutting room reduces time and costs, making it very popular among small businesses that had difficulty securing competitiveness.
Support projects to improve the working environment of sewing companies vulnerable to environmental factors will continue. Since 2019, environmental improvements have been supported for a total of 94 companies, including air conditioners, LED lighting, and organizing old wiring.
In addition, in relation to COVID-19 prevention, the district plans to continuously provide protective supplies such as masks and hand sanitizers to local sewing companies.
The district will conduct 'Jungnang Masil,' a field visit communication time with fashion sewing workers, until the 29th. They will visit 22 workplaces belonging to four local sewing organizations to share fashion sewing support projects and listen to on-site difficulties and suggestions.
Ryu Gyeong-gi, Mayor of Jungnang-gu, said, "To successfully build the fashion sewing industry cluster, we will continuously communicate with local residents and industry workers to listen to on-site opinions and actively collect feedback." He added, "We will do our best to strengthen the competitiveness of the fashion sewing industry, a representative local industry, to solidify the local economic foundation."
Songpa-gu (District Mayor Park Seong-su)'s youth-tailored job platform, 'Munjeong Biz Valley Job Hub Center,' announced the start of the 2022 program for the corporate current employee mentoring project 'Job Preparation Booster (Booster) Jump Up!' and is recruiting applicants for March.
'Job Preparation Booster Jump Up!' is a differentiated mentoring program of the Job Hub Center that received a high satisfaction score of 4.69 out of 5 in a post-use survey of 272 users last year. Park Seong-su, the district mayor, explained the background of the project, saying, "There is a need to provide opportunities to meet various corporate current employees to resolve the imbalance of job-related information for young job seekers."
This year, 'Job Preparation Booster Jump Up!' will connect young job seekers with current employees and HR experts from various companies, providing tailored capacity-building mentoring from March to November over 22 sessions, including VR mock interviews and portfolio creation. Education will be conducted both online and offline to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Currently, applications are being accepted for the March programs: ▲ 'Understanding Marketing Jobs through Personality and Competency' (3/23) ▲ 'Preparing Employment Strategies through Company Analysis' (3/30). The application deadline is one day before each program ends, and applications can be made through the Munjeong Biz Valley Job Hub Center website or the 'MyOnEdu' website. The education is free of charge.
The detailed schedule includes ▲ March to April: Establishing employment strategies related to popular employment fields (service, marketing, video shooting) through pre-employment diagnostic tests. ▲ May to June: Practical special lectures such as mock interview studies and OA lectures (Notion, Excel, etc.). ▲ July to November: Focus on 'video shooting and editing portfolio,' an essential element in trend marketing. Additionally, diverse job-specific programs such as frontend, UI/UX design tool special lectures, and fashion design job portfolio creation will be provided.
The Munjeong Biz Valley Job Hub Center opened in 2019 under the plan to create an integrated job platform, a key project of the 7th local government. It offers various tailored services such as 1:1 all-in-one service 'Job Fitness' for young job seekers, 'Munjeong Biz Valley Alja (Jja) Company Interview' introducing over 3,000 new growth engine industries to youth, and practical job experience mini-internship 'Song Employee.' Over three years until 2021, a total of 508 people succeeded in employment. In 2022, various hobby lectures and networking programs to relieve COVID blues for youth and single-person households will also be introduced.
Park Seong-su, district mayor, said, "Songpa-gu has the largest youth population in Seoul and hosts various companies from large corporations to SMEs. We are promoting comprehensive youth job policies from mentoring to startup support tailored to these regional characteristics." He added, "We will continue to create diverse and creative job programs so that the youth, the future of Songpa-gu, can live confidently."
Meanwhile, the Job Hub Center operates various visiting programs such as ▲ personality and job psychology tests using the 'Enneagram,' ▲ resume and cover letter clinics and mock interviews with professional job counselors, and ▲ interview experiences using AI/VR, the latest recruitment trends. The center operates from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays.
Jongno-gu is committed to pursuing 'sustainable development' policies and projects in 2022 to realize the mid- to long-term vision of 'Jongno, a sustainable city embracing history and nature, with a happier tomorrow,' declared after multiple deliberations and public discussions among residents, administration, and experts.
This year, following the establishment of 197 detailed projects aimed at achieving regionally specialized goals corresponding to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the UN in January, Jongno-gu will conduct sustainability evaluations from April. The evaluation will assess the achievements and limitations of policies and projects carried out over the past two years from a sustainability perspective and explore future directions.
Particular attention will be paid to the impact of the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic on urban sustainability.
Additionally, in accordance with the enactment of the Basic Act on Sustainable Development, existing ordinances will be revised to institutionally support residents' sustainable lives. Various projects encouraging small daily practices to realize the value of sustainable development are also planned.
Projects include the 'Carbon Footprint Record Book,' which encourages recording and practicing sustainability in daily life; the 'Eco-friendly Reusable Cup Project,' which suppresses carbon emissions and single-use cup usage; the 'Smart IoT Separate Waste Collection Box Project,' which promotes waste separation using information and communication technology; and the 'Carbon-absorbing Forest Creation Project,' which involves planting and nurturing trees.
Furthermore, Jongno-gu plans to strengthen its capabilities by exchanging and cooperating with external organizations such as the Sustainable Development Local Government Council and ICLEI, a global network of local governments for sustainability, and to promote its excellent policies by participating in related contests.
In January 2020, Jongno-gu gained attention as the first local government in the country to implement the 'Eco-friendly Printing Guidelines,' which discourage unnecessary printing and paper use to minimize harm to nature and people.
As part of climate action projects, the district has also promoted the '1·1·1 Lifestyle Practice Movement,' where individuals reduce greenhouse gas emissions by one ton annually, and the 'Digital Carbon Reduction Movement,' which encourages the use of computer power-saving programs and mailbox management to suppress carbon emissions generated by digital devices.
In 2021, Jongno-gu received praise for leading various projects in collaboration with the 'Jongno-gu Climate Action Practice Council,' composed of public institutions, companies, schools, and environmental organizations within the region. Representative examples include the 'Eco-friendly Reusable Cup Project,' which fully uses reusable cups at KB Kookmin Card headquarters and the district office's in-house cafes; the 'Children's 111 Lifestyle Practice Movement,' where children pledge to reduce carbon emissions after climate change education; and the 'Jongno Healing Smart Farm Project,' which helps growing students experience information and communication technology and urban agriculture.
An official from the district stated, "Through public-private cooperation, we have been able to realize a sustainable blueprint for Jongno. Moving forward, we will focus on establishing a comprehensive and systematic sustainable development system and collaborate with local members to enhance the city's sustainability."

This year's call for proposals includes two fields: ▲ 'Our Village Solution Project,' where residents jointly consider and act on social issues and village concerns such as cleaning, childcare, and care; and ▲ 'Community Meeting Activation Project,' which expands neighbor networks based on voluntary participation of residents with common interests.
The district plans to support a total budget of 54 million KRW through this call, with up to 3 million KRW per group for selected projects.
