Metaverse, Robots, XR Content... Top 3 Korean Telecom Companies Showcase Korean Technology (Comprehensive)

[Asia Economy Reporter Cha Min-young] The telecommunications industry, traditionally a 'domestic market' sector, is heading to the global central stage by leading next-generation technologies such as the metaverse, robots, and extended reality (XR) content. As the 3rd anniversary of 5G commercialization approaches, the three major telecom companies will also share their accumulated experience in utilizing 5G services with people worldwide.

SKT Emphasizes Metaverse World 'Ifland'

SK Telecom announced on the 27th that it will set up a solo exhibition hall in Hall 3 of Fira Gran Via at the 'Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2022,' a global mobile and IT exhibition opening on the 28th in Barcelona, Spain.

The SK Telecom exhibition hall is organized into four themes: ▲Metaverse ▲AI ▲5G & Beyond ▲Special Zone, with an overall metaverse concept applied. The metaverse service 'Ifland' will also be showcased. On the LED display board located at the center of the exhibition hall, the representative avatar of Ifland will appear, and in the separately prepared 'Metaverse Zone,' a metaverse gallery and metaverse K-pop concerts will be held. Notably, the global version of Ifland and the virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) version will be unveiled for the first time.

SK Telecom's AI semiconductor 'Sapeon,' developed purely with domestic technology, will also be introduced to the European market for the first time at this event. Quantum cryptography communication technologies will be showcased, including a quantum cryptography generator and quantum phone linked with 5G. Urban Air Mobility (UAM) will be presented as a futuristic service. Other highlights include the AI speaker 'NUGU Multi-Agent,' developed in partnership with Amazon Alexa, the subscription service 'T Universe,' and next-generation 5G technologies such as 5G frequency aggregation technology.

KT's exhibition hall is themed 'The Engine of Digital Innovation, Digico KT' and is divided into three zones: ▲AI ▲Robots ▲KT Group & Partners. A 'Digico Land' metaverse is also set up for visitors to explore the exhibition virtually.

In the AI zone, the 'AI Contact Center (AICC),' launched domestically in the second half of last year, will be unveiled. KT AICC incorporates AI active complex dialogue technology that understands the flow of conversation and analyzes the speaker's intent, along with customer center operational know-how. The intelligent traffic infrastructure DX solution 'Traffic Digital Twin' detects vehicles and pedestrians through CCTV footage, analyzes unexpected situations, and provides necessary traffic information. The 'Hybrid 5G MEC (Mobile Edge Computing) Platform' recognizes facial expressions, gestures, and disaster situations from CCTV footage to respond to emergencies. AI-based immersive services like 'Real Dance' and AI-based 5G operation solution 'Doctor Wise,' which enhances network quality, will also be exhibited.

In the robot zone, an AI disinfection robot equipped with autonomous driving functions will be unveiled for the first time. 'Giga WiFi Home 6E,' which supports 6 GHz frequency to provide indoor robot communication environments via Wi-Fi, will welcome visitors. The next-generation integrated terminal 'S-Box,' which combines a set-top box and AI Giga Genie platform, and the 'AIoT (Artificial Intelligence of Things) Electric Wheelchair,' capable of remote control and assisted autonomous driving, will also be showcased.
