[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Jong-hwa] Continuous social contribution activities for the development and coexistence of local communities by the cement industry are attracting attention. Along with the local coexistence activities of cement companies in areas with cement factories, programs for revitalizing local communities are becoming more abundant as the Fund Management Committee, which will operate the fund contributed by the cement industry starting this year, has begun full-scale activities.
Sampyo Cement donated 8,000 KF94 masks to Samcheok City on the 14th and is also working to discover local talents who will shine on the global sports stage. In May last year, it signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Samcheok City Sports Council to support the costs necessary for hosting various sports competitions and discovering and nurturing promising athletes.
Ssangyong C&E signed an agreement on the 16th with the social welfare corporation Save the Children to support educational projects for low-income vulnerable children in the Gangwon region. The talent development project, which had been operated mainly in Donghae City and Yeongwol County where Ssangyong C&E’s production plants are located, has been expanded to students from low-income families throughout the Gangwon region. Ssangyong C&E provides school uniforms, bags, and school supplies needed for the new semester.
Hanil Cement Co., Ltd. Dan-yang Plant delivered shoulder and neck massagers worth 3 million KRW to the Maepo-eup Community Security Council on the 17th of last month. The donation was raised through the "Love Spare Change Account," where employees of Hanil Cement Co., Ltd. Dan-yang Plant collect spare change under 1,000 KRW from their monthly salary accounts. The spare change collection activity has continued for 21 years since 2002, and through voluntary participation of employees, a total of 33 million KRW worth of donations has been delivered so far.
Asea Cement Co., Ltd. purchased gift packages with about 4 million KRW collected by employees last December and delivered them to underprivileged local residents. They also provided scholarships of 500,000 KRW each to five children from financially struggling families.

Halla Cement also delivered about 5 million KRW of salary rounding funds raised by employees and the company throughout 2021 to the Ok-gye Township Office in November last year. In December, it donated 30.88 million KRW in relief funds to the communities of Gangneung, Pohang, and Samcheok. It has been steadily carrying out social contribution activities such as operating the Gangneung Ok-gye Regional Development Fund, the Ok-gye Township-Halla Cement Scholarship Foundation, and the Ok-gye Township Cultural Center. For over 20 years, it has also supported the Korean Habitat for Humanity’s "Building Hope" project by donating all the cement needed.

Sungshin Cement donated packaged rice cake soup worth 10 million KRW to Danyang County, Chungbuk Province last month. The cost was raised through the "Collecting Spare Change from Salaries" social contribution program in which all employees participate.
An official from the Korea Cement Association said, "We are always grateful to the local residents and community members who have unwaveringly supported the development of the cement industry for a long time," adding, "We will continue to expand social contribution programs to repay the consideration and sacrifices made so far."
