[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Eun-mo] Kim Jae-cheol, Honorary Chairman of Dongwon Group, will be inducted into the 'Korea Entrepreneur Hall of Fame.'


The Korean Academic Society of Business Administration announced on the morning of the 22nd that it held an induction ceremony for the 'Korea Entrepreneur Hall of Fame' at Yonsei University Seoul Campus in Seodaemun-gu, Seoul, and inducted Honorary Chairman Kim.


Honorary Chairman Kim is the founder of Dongwon Group and Korea Investment Holdings, and a first-generation business leader who has led the history of South Korea's economic growth. He began his career in 1958 at the age of 23 as a trainee navigator on Korea's first deep-sea fishing vessel, the 'Jinamho,' and founded Dongwon Industries in 1969, pioneering Korean deep-sea fishing and growing it into the world's largest deep-sea fishing company.


He also served as the 23rd Chairman of the Korea International Trade Association from 1999, leading the association for seven years, and chaired the bid committee for the '2012 Yeosu World Expo,' successfully securing the event. He is recognized for contributing to national development beyond business activities in various fields. In 1979, the 10th anniversary of his founding, Honorary Chairman Kim established the 'Dongwon Yukyoung Foundation,' actively promoting scholarship programs and character education.


Recently, he has shown interest in nurturing artificial intelligence (AI) talent in South Korea, donating 50 billion KRW of his personal fortune to KAIST in 2020. For his contributions to strengthening the global competitiveness of the national AI industry, he was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Science and Technology from KAIST on the 18th.


Honorary Chairman Kim stated, "For the past 50 years, I have operated my business based on principles and convictions of ethical management and a spirit of challenge. Although there are many excellent junior managers on the front lines of management, I am grateful for this undeserved honor given to me after my retirement."
