Biden Nominates Philip Goldberg as U.S. Ambassador to South Korea

[Asia Economy New York=Special Correspondent Joselgina] U.S. President Joe Biden announced on the 11th (local time) that he has nominated Philip Goldberg, U.S. Ambassador to Colombia, as the U.S. Ambassador to South Korea, the White House revealed.

Nominee Goldberg served as the State Department's Coordinator for UN North Korea Sanctions Implementation during the Barack Obama administration from 2009 to 2010. He later held positions such as Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of Intelligence and Research (INR) at the State Department and Ambassador to the Philippines.

He holds the highest rank given to diplomats by the State Department, Career Ambassador, and has been serving as Ambassador to Colombia since 2019 during the Donald Trump administration.

The position of U.S. Ambassador to South Korea has been vacant for over a year since Ambassador Harry Harris left in January last year. This will be the first time since Sung Kim, who served as Ambassador to South Korea from 2011 to 2014, that a career diplomat is appointed as Ambassador to South Korea.
