1,335 Current and Former Democratic Party Members in Gwangju Region Declare Support for Yoon Seok-yeol

The Democratic Party Urged to "Reborn as a Party That Lives Up to the People's Expectations"

1,335 Current and Former Democratic Party Members in Gwangju Region Declare Support for Yoon Seok-yeol Former and current members of the Democratic Party of Korea in Gwangju Metropolitan City are holding a press conference supporting Yoon Seok-yeol, the presidential candidate of the People Power Party, at the Gwangju City Council on the morning of the 8th.

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] A group of current and former Democratic Party members in the Gwangju area have come forward to support Yoon Seok-yeol, the presidential candidate of the People Power Party.

On the morning of the 8th, they officially endorsed candidate Yoon at the Gwangju Metropolitan Council, criticizing the current government's failure in state administration and the unsuitability of the ruling party's candidate.

The group of current and former Democratic Party members stated, "During the current government's five-year term, the people have lived with extreme anxiety and confusion, and nothing has been properly managed in politics, economy, society, or security."

They pointed out social injustices and polarization manifested by repeated failures in real estate policies, the harsh reality faced by the younger generation experiencing employment cliffs and having to give up marriage and childbirth, contradictions in the uniform and oppressive K-quarantine measures during the COVID-19 era along with the cries of self-employed and small business owners, as well as unstable foreign diplomacy and security, humiliating North Korea policies, and astronomical debt burdens that future generations will have to bear.

They said, "The Democratic Party, a major party with over 180 seats, has nominated a candidate for this presidential election who changes positions according to circumstances, possesses a criminal record that defies common sense, and whose family’s disgraceful misconduct and abusive language have turned public opinion against him," adding, "The Daejang-dong corruption cartel that mocked the entire nation has turned South Korea into a corrupt republic, and despite tragic incidents where related parties have taken their own lives, they continue to evade responsibility."

They also added, "Recently, controversies over the candidate’s spouse’s abuse of power as a public official have surfaced," raising their voices, "A candidate who has not cultivated personal virtue cannot properly govern the country."

They further emphasized, "Although we were once proud members of the Democratic Party, we have decided not to choose the Democratic Party unconditionally in this national crisis," stressing, "Faulty groupthink is destroying the country, and we have a responsibility to protect this nation and its people through choices that transcend party or faction."

They continued, "Candidate Yoon Seok-yeol is the candidate called forth by the people, a leader who can restore broken rule of law and create a country where fairness and common sense prevail, a person who values people and possesses warm humanity," and said, "The handwritten letter he sent to the Honam region this time moved voters fatigued by the election and reaffirmed his humane qualities."

They also noted, "The candidate, who once worked in Gwangju, has stated that he will practice politics resembling the reliable and generous Mudeungsan Mountain," expressing confidence that "his interest in Honam is higher than in any other city or province, and he will sincerely approach the local people until they open their hearts."

The group stated, "Now, the people want a leader who can realize political, economic, and social development, establish the order of liberal democracy, and protect the life of the nation and its people," arguing, "The new government must overcome the difficult COVID-19 period, solve real estate problems, protect the vulnerable, and pursue a happy society where the quality of life improves in a society free of discrimination."

Finally, they said, "We hope candidate Yoon Seok-yeol will be elected president in the March 9 presidential election, become a president who protects the country's democracy and gives hope to the people," adding, "We also hope the Democratic Party will be reborn as a party that meets the people's expectations after nominating an unjust candidate and betraying the party’s fundamental spirit."
