[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] The Supreme People's Assembly, North Korea's highest sovereign body under the constitution and equivalent to our National Assembly, will be held in Pyongyang on the 6th. In particular, attention is focused on whether Kim Jong-un, General Secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea, will attend this Supreme People's Assembly and deliver an external message.

An official from the Ministry of Unification told reporters on the 3rd, "In the past, General Secretary Kim has delivered a policy speech at the Supreme People's Assembly outlining the overall direction of domestic and foreign policies," adding that they are paying close attention to whether General Secretary Kim will attend the Supreme People's Assembly and deliver a policy speech.

Although General Secretary Kim is not a delegate to the Supreme People's Assembly, he has sent external messages several times through policy speeches at the Assembly in the past.

In the policy speech at the Supreme People's Assembly on April 13, 2019, he expressed willingness for a third North Korea-U.S. summit for the first time after the Hanoi breakdown, and at the Supreme People's Assembly on September 29 last year, he promised to restore inter-Korean communication lines.

Accordingly, there is keen interest in whether General Secretary Kim will send messages to the U.S. and South Korea through a policy speech at this Supreme People's Assembly as well. Especially since this comes right after seven missile provocations last month, there is also a possibility that the speech may contain strong remarks toward the U.S.
