Asan Plant with Annual Production Capacity of 300,000 Units Completes Electric Vehicle Facility Construction
The Hyundai Ioniq 6 concept car Prophecy exhibited at IAA Mobility 2021 held in Germany last September [Asia Economy Reporter Choi Dae-yeol] Hyundai Motor Company announced on the 3rd that it has completed facility construction to produce electric vehicles at its Asan plant in South Korea.
This plant has been producing Hyundai's main sedans, Sonata and Grandeur, with an annual production capacity of about 300,000 units. Some of the existing lines will be converted to manufacture the company's second dedicated electric vehicle, the Ioniq 6. The launch of the Ioniq 6 is scheduled for the second half of this year. The production volume will be decided after final agreements with the labor union on the production line and manpower to be deployed. It is reported that a final agreement with the union has not yet been reached.
If Hyundai produces electric vehicles at the Asan plant, it will become the company's second domestic plant for mass production of electric vehicles. The first model applying Hyundai's self-developed dedicated electric vehicle platform E-GMP, the Ioniq 5, is currently produced at the Ulsan plant.
Other electric vehicle models of the company, such as the Kona EV, Genesis GV60, G80 and GV70 electric vehicles, and the 1-ton truck Porter electric vehicle, have been produced at Ulsan plants 1 through 5 respectively. Kia, part of the same group, produces electric vehicles (Niro, EV6, Bongo, etc.) at its Hwaseong and Gwangju plants.
Among Hyundai Motor and Kia's overseas plants, some plants in China and the Czech Republic produce electric vehicles, and other regional plants, including those in the United States, are also considering establishing electric vehicle production lines.
