Daily confirmed cases on 27th increased 2.6 times compared to previous week
Positivity rate also rose by 0.3%p to 3.2% from the day before

[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] The number of COVID-19 cases in Seoul is approaching 4,000 as it has set a new record for the highest number of cases for three consecutive days.


On the 28th, the Seoul Metropolitan Government announced that the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases on the 27th was 3,991. This is an increase of 562 cases compared to the previous day (26th), and 2.6 times (2,440 cases) higher than a week ago on the 20th (1,551 cases).


The daily confirmed cases in Seoul have remained in the 3,000 range for three consecutive days. After setting a record high of 3,165 cases on the 14th of last month, the number dropped to around 700 but has risen back to the 3,000 range since the 25th.


The number of tests conducted on the 27th was 137,908. The number of people tested, which was in the 110,000 range as of the 24th, has also increased significantly. The positivity rate, which is the ratio of confirmed cases to the number of tests conducted, rose by 0.3 percentage points from 2.9% the previous day to 3.2% on this day.


Among the new confirmed cases, 3,946 were domestic transmissions and 45 were imported cases. By age group, the highest number of cases were in their 20s (31%), followed by teenagers (17%), 30s (16%), and 40s (14%).


At a kindergarten in Seodaemun-gu, 22 people were confirmed positive due to a cluster infection. After one student was first confirmed positive on the 22nd, 15 students and 6 family members subsequently tested positive. The kindergarten will be temporarily closed until February 2nd.


As of the previous day, the bed occupancy rates in Seoul were 20.7% for beds dedicated to severe patients, 23.2% for infectious disease hospitals, and 53.1% for residential treatment centers. The number of patients undergoing home treatment increased by 2,384 from the previous day to 11,862.


As of midnight on this day, the cumulative number of confirmed cases in Seoul was 264,748, with 51,397 patients in isolation. One additional death was reported the previous day, bringing the total number of deaths to 2,169.
