Daejeon City Saves 100 Million Won Budget by Recycling Abandoned Construction Materials

[Asia Economy (Daejeon) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] Daejeon City announced on the 29th that it saved 100 million KRW in budget by recycling construction materials discarded at construction sites within the city.

The recycling of construction materials was made possible through the resource information system operated last year.

This system was operated to reduce project costs and lower carbon emissions through resource recycling by publicly disclosing information on construction materials such as soil and rock discarded at construction sites promoted by administrative agencies on the city’s website, enabling their reuse.

The city introduced the resource information system in 2005 and has made related information available to the private sector since 2015 to facilitate resource recycling.

Through this, the city achieved a total cost saving of 116 million KRW last year by recycling 41,000㎥ of soil from the Pyeongchon General Industrial Complex support road construction project and 10,000㎥ of soil from the Pyeongchon District urban development project site formation work.

From 2005 to last year, the total budget saved through this method amounted to 24.9 billion KRW, with the city recycling 10,408,000㎥ of soil from 303 construction sites during that period.

Choi Jin-seok, Chairman of the City Audit Committee, stated, “For the resource information system to be operated more effectively, departments such as city business offices, autonomous districts, and Daejeon Urban Corporation, which place orders, must input recyclable resources into the system at the early stages of construction so that these resources can be recycled in a timely manner.”
