[Asia Economy Reporter Baek Kyunghwan] Lee Jae-myung, the presidential candidate of the Democratic Party of Korea, announced that he will actively support the relocation of Gwangju Military Airport. This is a strategy to directly address the long-standing local issue, which has been a key pledge of past governments, in order to boost support in the Honam region. Lee also unveiled plans to establish a super-regional transportation network, including the Gwangju-Naju metropolitan railway.
On the morning of the 27th, Lee announced these joint pledges for Gwangju and Jeonnam at Gwangju Airport in Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju. Despite being a key pledge of past governments, the relocation of Gwangju Military Airport has not found a solution for several years, according to Lee. He stated, "I, Lee Jae-myung, will realize the citizens' wish to plant the future of Gwangju on the military airport site."
He also announced plans for ▲an AI (Artificial Intelligence) specialized enterprise city ▲support for the transition of the automobile industry to future mobility industries ▲creation of a 'Startup Valley' between Gwangju Station and Chonnam National University ▲reorganization of the Asia Culture Center City ▲and constitutional preamble enshrinement of the spirit of the May 18 Democratic Movement. Specifically, he mentioned establishing an AI research institute in Gwangju and supporting the creation of AI R&D infrastructure. The plan also includes promoting the establishment of a comprehensive education center tailored for AI companies to nurture the necessary workforce. He added, "We will create a place where cutting-edge future mobility such as eco-friendly autonomous vehicles and urban air mobility can be researched, tested, produced, and certified all in one location," and "We will expand the Bitgreen Industrial Complex to form a future mobility convergence cluster."
He also revealed plans to enshrine the spirit of the 'May 18 Democratic Movement' in the constitutional preamble. Lee said, "By including the spirit of the May 18 Democratic Movement in the constitutional preamble, we will establish it as a great history of the Republic of Korea that no one can damage or deny," and "We will support transforming the old Gwangju Prison into a Democratic Human Rights Memorial Park to become a hall of democracy that shares history."
Additionally, he presented three joint major pledges for the Gwangju and Jeonnam regions: ▲actively supporting the promotion of the Gwangju-Jeonnam Triport connecting railways, airports, and ports ▲leading the 'Energy Highway' for Gwangju and Jeonnam ▲actively supporting the creation of Yeongsan River National Garden and restoration of the Mahan cultural area. Lee promised to actively support the promotion of the Gwangju-Jeonnam Triport connecting railways, airports, and ports to open a new southern region.
