Yoon Seok-yeol, the spouse of the People Power Party's presidential candidate Kim Geon-hee, has been embroiled in a 'shamanism controversy' following claims that she has had ties with Jeon Mo, who has been active as a 'Geonjin Beopsa' for the past seven years. [Image source=Yonhap News]
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoon Seul-gi] Kim Eui-gyeom, a member of the Open Democratic Party classified as pro-government, claimed that Jeon Mo, known as the 'Geonjin Beopsa' who was active in Yoon Seok-yeol's People Power Party presidential campaign, had a long-standing relationship with Yoon's spouse Kim Geon-hee, sparking a growing 'shamanism controversy.' In response, the People Power Party has pushed back, calling it a "malicious shaman frame," intensifying the fierce exchanges between the ruling and opposition parties.
Kim, who has effectively completed the merger process with the Democratic Party, held a press conference at the National Assembly on the afternoon of the 23rd, claiming that Jeon, known as the 'Geonjin Beopsa,' participated in the VIP opening event of an exhibition organized by Kobana Contents, where Kim Geon-hee is the CEO, in 2015, and released related photos and videos.
On the 23rd, Kim Eui-gyeom, a member of the Open Democratic Party, held a press conference at the National Assembly Communication Office in Yeouido, Seoul, revealing photos and videos showing that 'Geonjin Beopsa' attended the VIP opening event of the 'Mark Rothko' exhibition organized by Covana Contents at the Seoul Arts Center in 2015. Kim stated, "It has been confirmed that Jeon has known Kim Geon-hee well for at least seven years," adding, "The presence of Haewoo Sunim, the head monk of Ilgwangsa Temple in Chungju and known as the master of Geonjin Beopsa, was also confirmed. The two attended the opening ceremony side by side."
He continued, "The photos and videos confirmed this time prove Haewoo Sunim's statement that 'Jeon attended the Kobana Contents exhibitions hosted by Kim about three times to offer blessings,' and at the same time confirm the long-standing relationship among the three: Haewoo Sunim, Kim Geon-hee, and Geonjin Beopsa. After the Segye Ilbo reported that Geonjin Beopsa serves as an advisor to Yoon's campaign headquarters' network division and exerts practical influence, Yoon stated, 'I was introduced to him by someone in our party and greeted him,' but this is likely a statement to conceal Kim," he said.
Kim also revealed that the event at the time was a VIP opening ceremony attended by heavyweight politicians including ruling and opposition floor leaders, as well as Mark Lippert, the U.S. Ambassador to Korea, and that Kim Geon-hee was also present in the same space.
Kim Jin-wook, spokesperson for the Democratic Party's election campaign committee, also launched an offensive on the same day, referring to Kim Geon-hee's so-called '7-hour recording' containing details about her relationship with shamans. Kim said, "Kim vividly testified about the relationship between Yoon and his spouse and the shamans, even saying, 'I can handle most shamans,' and read the reporter's physiognomy and palm lines," adding, "This is why Yoon's People Power Party campaign headquarters is called the 'shamanistic secret campaign headquarters.'"
On the afternoon of the 16th, the MBC program "Straight," which covers the '7-hour phone call' content of Kim Geon-hee, spouse of Yoon Seok-yeol, the People Power Party's presidential candidate, is being broadcast on the electronic billboard at the MBC building in Sangam-dong, Seoul. As the 'shamanism controversy' surrounding Kim Geon-hee grew, the People Power Party rebutted, calling it a "false shaman frame." Lee Yang-su, chief spokesperson for the People Power Party's campaign headquarters, issued a statement saying, "Kim Eui-gyeom is trying to impose a false shaman frame, but it is groundless," explaining, "The March 2015 Mark Rothko exhibition was a massive event attended by hundreds of thousands, including figures from the economic, cultural, and religious sectors, as well as former Minister Park Young-sun and former lawmaker Woo Yoon-geun, who are now pro-government figures."
He added, "Kim is deliberately trying to frame it as a long-standing friendship with a shaman. This is malicious and completely untrue," criticizing the claims.
