[Asia Economy Reporter Junhyung Lee] A fire broke out at a bedding store in Heukseok Market, Dongjak-gu, Seoul, around 6:37 a.m. on the 22nd and was extinguished after about 3 hours and 20 minutes.
According to the fire authorities, a woman in her 70s who was in an adjacent store inhaled smoke and lost consciousness. She was taken to the hospital and is currently reported to have regained consciousness. An woman in her 80s found in the bedding store suffered burns on her wrist and received emergency treatment at the scene. Including the two injured, a total of five people evacuated. Four of them were rescued by the fire authorities.
The bedding store where the fire started and the adjacent store were completely burned down. Three nearby stores were partially damaged. It is estimated that 16 stores and 2 houses were affected.
The fire authorities issued a Level 1 response around 6:56 a.m. They mobilized 123 personnel and 42 pieces of equipment and completely extinguished the fire around 9:57 a.m. A resident living near Heukseok Market said, "The flames rose as if a fire had broken out in a factory," adding, "I was surprised to see the fire right in front of the window and woke people up to evacuate around 6:30 a.m."
The fire authorities and police plan to investigate the exact cause of the fire through fire forensics.
