Jeonbuk Province Promotes Park Plan Changes for Four Provincial Parks

[Jeonju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Han-ho] Jeonbuk Province announced on the 21st that it plans to promote changes to the park plans for four provincial parks this year, with the core goal of enhancing conservation value for the sustainable preservation and use of provincial parks.

According to the province, changes to park plans are legal tasks carried out every 10 years under Article 15 of the Natural Parks Act, which involve gathering opinions from local residents, experts, and other stakeholders to review the validity of park boundaries and other park plans, and then changing and implementing the park plans accordingly.

Accordingly, Jeonbuk Province will establish plans for the next 10 years (2023?2032) for four provincial parks covering 139.375㎦.

The validity survey of the park plans evaluates the ecological basis in four areas (habitat foundation, primitiveness, protected areas, landscape/terrain/geology and cultural resources) by utilizing spatial data on ecological resources and protected areas for each park. Then, it assesses the appropriateness of park boundary releases, inclusions, and zoning by considering field surveys and expert opinions.

Jeonbuk Province also plans to expand participation opportunities for local residents, landowners, experts, and local governments?stakeholders of provincial parks?during the park plan change process, and to sufficiently collect opinions to ensure fairness and transparency.

The contract for the park plan change service is scheduled for February, and it is expected to take about 18 months after the contract is signed.

The draft park plan changes will go through review and adjustment procedures such as public viewing of maps, public hearings to gather opinions from local residents and the cities/counties managing the provincial parks, and consultations with related administrative agencies. The final plan will be confirmed in the second half of 2023 through submission and deliberation by the Jeollabuk-do Provincial Park Committee.

Meanwhile, Jeonbuk provincial parks include Moaksan, located at the boundary of Jeonju, Gimje, and Wanju, as well as Daedunsan (Wanju), Maisan (Jinan), and Seonunsan (Gochang).
