[Breaking] Former Seongnam City Council Chairman Choi Yoon-gil Arrested on 4 Billion Won Daejang-dong Allegations

[Asia Economy Reporter Baek Kyunghwan] Former Seongnam City Council Chairman Choi Yoon-gil has been detained on charges of accepting bribes worth around 4 billion KRW from Hwacheon Daeyu, the private developer of the Daejang-dong project.

On the 18th, Judge Oh Dae-seok of Suwon District Court, who is in charge of warrants, issued an arrest warrant for former Chairman Choi around 9 PM, stating, "The criminal charges have been substantiated, and there is concern about evidence tampering."

Former Chairman Choi is accused of assisting Hwacheon Daeyu by passing the ordinance to establish the Seongnam Urban Development Corporation for the Daejang-dong public-private joint development during his tenure as city council chairman in 2013. In return, he allegedly became vice chairman of Hwacheon Daeyu in 2020, receiving a salary of 100 million KRW and agreeing to receive performance bonuses totaling around 4 billion KRW.
