Dongkuk Steel Songwon Cultural Foundation Awards Scholarship Certificates to 19th Songwon Scholars

[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] The Songwon Cultural Foundation under Dongkuk Steel held the '19th Songwon Scholarship Certificate Award Ceremony' on the 18th at the Ferrum Tower, its headquarters in Euljiro, Seoul.

The Songwon Scholarship program is part of the Songwon Cultural Foundation's scholarship initiatives. The recipients are science and engineering students from regional universities. Selected students receive full tuition support for four consecutive semesters. Since 2004, the Songwon Cultural Foundation has been selecting Songwon Scholars for 19 years, awarding scholarships totaling approximately 3.5 billion KRW to 418 students to date.

The 19th cohort of Songwon Scholars consists of 15 students in total. They were selected from nine universities located in the Gyeongsang, Chungcheong, and Incheon regions, majoring in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, environmental science, and materials engineering. The scholarship fund has slightly increased from last year to about 190 million KRW.

Jang Se-wook, Chairman of the Songwon Cultural Foundation, said, "I hope that with the foundation's support, students can pursue their goals," adding, "Utilizing Dongkuk Steel's Junior Employee Program will also help with employment." Dongkuk Steel's Junior Employee Program is a unique talent recruitment system where interns are selected with the premise of 100% employment.

Meanwhile, the Songwon Cultural Foundation is a public interest foundation established by Dongkuk Steel in 1996. Dongkuk Steel founded the Songwon Cultural Foundation to give back to the local community that has continuously supported and trusted the company's growth, carrying out scholarship programs, cultural projects, and regional welfare initiatives. Jang Sang-tae, the second chairman of Dongkuk Steel, established the Daewon Cultural Foundation in 1996 to practice sharing, and Chairman Jang Se-ju later renamed it the Songwon Cultural Foundation after his father's pen name to continue the legacy. Currently, Jang Se-wook, Vice Chairman of Dongkuk Steel, serves as the foundation's chairman, expanding sharing through the selection of Songwon Scholars and provision of living support funds.
