Three Citizen Heroes on the Road Selected as 'POSCO Heroes'

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Heo Seonsik] POSCO Cheongam Foundation (Chairman Kim Seonwook) selected three "Heroes on the Road": Kim Dojung (46), who saved a child who lost consciousness while waiting at a traffic light by performing CPR and transported the child to the hospital; Song Daewoong (43), who witnessed a vehicle fire caused by a collision on the road, stopped his running bus, extinguished the fire early, and rescued lives; and university student Lee Gyusang (25), who spotted a drunk driver on the highway and contributed decisively to the arrest by pursuing the vehicle for 40 minutes. They were awarded plaques and scholarships as POSCO Heroes.

Kim Dojung, selected as a POSCO Hero this time, found a woman holding a child who had collapsed unconscious while waiting at a traffic light near Songpa Intersection in Seoul on November 27 last year. He performed CPR himself to restore the child's consciousness and, as the ambulance was slow to arrive in the cold weather, he put the child in his own car and took them to the hospital.

Kim said, "Seeing the woman holding the child and crying, I instinctively thought, 'This is a serious situation,' and ran out of the car." After arriving at the hospital, the child's mother wanted to express her gratitude, but he firmly declined and left the scene.

Song Daewoong, who was operating a city bus in Gyeongju, witnessed a vehicle collision accident at an intersection near Geoncheon IC on December 29 last year. When a fire broke out in the accident vehicle, he stopped the bus operation and took out the fire extinguisher and spare extinguisher stored on the bus to put out the fire.

Thanks to his prompt initial response, Song rescued a woman in her 20s who was in the accident vehicle and prevented the fire from spreading further. He said, "I just did what any citizen should do," and added, "I'm glad it didn't lead to greater damage."

University student Lee Gyusang spotted a suspected drunk driver on the highway near Sangju on December 30 last year. After reporting to the police, he pursued the vehicle, contributing to the police's arrest of a driver who was intoxicated to the level of license cancellation.

As the drunk driving vehicle exited the highway onto a national road, Lee kept informing the police of its location and continued the pursuit. He said, "Even though I chased for over 40 minutes, I hoped the drunk driver wouldn't cause an accident," and added, "I'm relieved that I was able to stop the drunk driver before entering the city and prevent greater damage."

The POSCO Heroes Fellowship is a program that supports heroes who sacrificed themselves for the nation and social justice or their children to continue their studies stably.

Established in 2019 to actively discover public officials and ordinary citizens who serve as social role models and to raise social interest in righteous actions, it aims to create a just society where members of our society can help each other even in difficult situations. To date, a total of 49 POSCO Heroes have been selected.
