[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyung-min] The number of new daily COVID-19 cases in Japan has exceeded 10,000.

According to a report by the local public broadcaster NHK on the 12th, the newly confirmed COVID-19 cases across Japan on that day were counted to have surpassed 10,000. This is the first time in four months since September 9 last year (10,395 cases). In particular, 2,198 cases were confirmed in the capital, Tokyo.

In August last year, COVID-19 spread rapidly in Japan, with daily cases exceeding 25,000 on some days. However, as vaccination progressed, the number of daily cases remained below 1,000 for about three months starting from early October of the same year, but recently infections have been increasing at a very fast pace.

Hirokazu Matsuno, Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary, announced at a press conference on the same day that the number of COVID-19 infections in U.S. military facilities in Japan was 4,326 as of the afternoon of the 11th.

It does not seem easy to put a brake on the spread of infections for the time being. According to an announcement from the Japanese Prime Minister’s Office, as of the 11th, the proportion of people who have completed the third dose of the vaccine was only 0.8% of the Japanese population.
