[Asia Economy Reporter Park Byung-hee] Bloomberg reported on the 5th (local time) that Germany's car sales last year fell to the lowest level in at least 30 years due to the semiconductor supply shortage.
The German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) announced on the same day that new car registrations in December last year decreased by 27%.
The total number of new car registrations for the year was 2.62 million, a 10% decrease compared to 2020. Bloomberg reported this as the lowest since at least 1990.
In 2019, just before the COVID-19 pandemic, new car registrations in Germany were 3.6 million.
The automotive industry expects the semiconductor supply shortage to gradually ease this year. However, it is anticipated that the shortage will continue during the first half of the year.
Car sales in Spain and Italy also showed poor performance in December last year. Spain's December sales dropped by nearly 20%, and Italy's car sales decreased by more than 25%.
