[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Hyunjin] Koo Ja-yeol, Chairman of the Korea International Trade Association (KITA), met with Lee Jae-myung, the Democratic Party of Korea's presidential candidate, on the 6th and urged him to make efforts to support innovation in the export industry.
Chairman Koo made these remarks to candidate Lee during an innovation company policy meeting held that morning at COEX in Samseong-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul.
Chairman Koo said, "Last year, our trade achieved the shortest-ever period to reach 1 trillion dollars in trade, as well as the highest trade volume and export amount in history, but there is no guarantee that these achievements will continue in the future," adding, "In the rapidly changing global trade environment, to maintain the status of a trade powerhouse, I hope the next government will actively support innovation in the trade industry, such as the convergence of traditional export industries and startups, and actively reflect the voices from export sites in its policies."
Along with this, Chairman Koo handed over the policy proposal book titled 'New Trade and Commerce Strategy for Resetting Korean Trade,' which contains the vision and strategies for trade policies that the next government should pursue. The proposal book includes the results of a survey conducted by KITA in October last year targeting 322 CEOs in the trade industry.
On the same day, candidate Lee discussed the outlook for innovative industries and innovation strategies for export companies with the KITA chairman group and 17 representatives of innovative startups. He also held a live video conference with companies participating in 'CES 2022,' the world's largest electronics and IT exhibition held in Las Vegas, USA.
