[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Hyun-ui] Liz Cheney, a prominent anti-Trump figure in the U.S. Republican Party and a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, stated regarding the January 6 U.S. Capitol riot that "there is direct evidence that Ivanka Trump, former White House senior advisor, requested intervention from former President Trump on the day of the incident."
Cheney, a member of the House Select Committee investigating the incident, said on the 2nd (local time) that Ivanka asked former President Trump at least twice to "stop the violence." Ivanka is the eldest daughter of former President Trump.
He emphasized, "Anyone who watches supporters storm the U.S. Capitol, incite violence to stop the counting of electoral votes, and see police officers being assaulted without intervening is clearly unfit for future public office," adding, "Our party must choose between the former president and the Constitution."
He also said, "Many Republicans try to protect the former president and obstruct the committee's activities, but the committee will not give up," and "In the end, facts matter and the truth matters."
Furthermore, he added, "We must be based on the law and fidelity to the Constitution," and "The entire nation needs to understand how important voting is to making one's voice heard."
Bennie Thompson, chairman of the special committee, also supported Cheney's claim in an interview with CNN, stating, "The committee has significant evidence to believe that the White House was asked to do something."
Chairman Thompson indirectly targeted former President Trump, saying, "The only thing I can say is that it is very strange for someone responsible for something to see what is happening and do nothing."
However, he did not comment on whether former President Trump's actions constitute a crime, saying, "If there is something that the Department of Justice should investigate, we will do so."
