[Sejong=Asia Economy Reporter Joo Sang-don] The monthly salary for sergeants in 2022 will be 676,100 KRW, an increase of 11.1% compared to this year.

On the 31st, the government published a guide titled "Changes Starting from 2022" containing this information.

According to the guide, the salary for enlisted soldiers in 2022 will be raised by 11.1% compared to 2021, reaching 50% of the 2017 minimum wage (1.35 million KRW).

The sergeant's salary will increase from 608,500 KRW this year to 676,100 KRW next year. Corporals will see an increase from 549,200 KRW to 610,200 KRW, privates first class from 496,900 KRW to 552,100 KRW, and privates from 459,100 KRW to 510,100 KRW.

A Ministry of National Defense official stated, "In 2017, the sergeant's salary was only 15% of the minimum wage, which was less than the minimum cost of living in the barracks. As a result, the salary for enlisted soldiers has been increased annually from 2018 to 2022." He added, "This level allows soldiers to live in the barracks without external support and to save a lump sum necessary for entering society upon discharge, which will help boost the morale of conscripted soldiers and improve their welfare."
