[Asia Economy New York=Correspondent Baek Jong-min] The U.S. Department of State expressed its position that it is fully committed to dialogue with North Korea in response to Foreign Minister Chung Eui-yong's statement that South Korea and the U.S. have virtually agreed on the wording of a declaration to formally end the Korean War.
A spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State said on the 29th (local time), in response to the question "Is it true that South Korea and the U.S. have agreed on the declaration to formally end the war?" that "The United States remains committed to achieving lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula through dialogue and diplomacy with North Korea."
The spokesperson explained, "We will continue to seek engagement with North Korea as part of a coordinated and pragmatic approach to achieve tangible progress in strengthening the security of the United States, its allies, and deployed forces."
The State Department's remarks did not include the content of Minister Chung's statement. However, it only reaffirmed the policy of continuing attempts at dialogue with North Korea.
Minister Chung said at a press briefing that "South Korea and the U.S. already share a consensus on the importance of the declaration to formally end the war, and there is virtually an agreement on the wording."
