Naju City Completes Access Road to KEPCO University... Opening in March Next Year

[Naju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yuk-bong] Naju City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Kang In-gyu) is accelerating the construction of infrastructure along with campus construction for the normal opening of KENTECH (Korea Energy Technology University), whose access road is completed ahead of its opening in March next year.

The city announced on the 27th that it has completed the construction of the urban planning road (hereinafter referred to as the access road) for Korea Energy Technology University (KENTECH) and held a completion ceremony on the same day.

The KENTECH access road, which began construction in December last year, was built with a total project cost of 3 billion KRW, spanning 643 meters in length and 25 meters in width, as a four-lane road with sidewalks and a dedicated bicycle lane for pedestrian convenience.

The road opening is scheduled for early next year around the university's opening time to finalize lane markings and signal systems following the construction of the four-lane road.

Once the road opens, travel time for campus construction vehicles as well as residents of nearby villages such as Songnim-ri, Sanpo-myeon, adjacent to the innovation city, is expected to be reduced by about 5 to 10 minutes, improving traffic convenience.

The completion ceremony was attended by Mayor Kang In-gyu, City Council Chairman Kim Young-duk, provincial and city council members, KENTECH President Yoon Ui-jun and university officials, as well as representatives from the Bitgaram, Sanpo, and Geumcheon-myeon neighborhood associations and residents.

The city presented a plaque of appreciation to the construction company in gratitude for the safe construction of the access road supporting the normal opening of the university.

Mayor Kang In-gyu said in his commemorative speech, “We will devote all efforts to building various infrastructures for the normal opening of KENTECH in March next year following the completion of the access road,” adding, “Along with the establishment of the university, we will do our best to build Korea’s energy capital through attracting large national research facilities such as the ultra-high-power laser center and creating research institutes and clusters.”

KENTECH, established as a national project under the Moon Jae-in administration, aims to be the world’s only university specializing in energy-focused research and entrepreneurial talent development, and construction began last June.

The campus construction will proceed in three phases by 2025, covering a total site area of 384,083㎡ with campus facilities spanning 155,000㎡.

The first phase focuses on basic educational facilities such as administrative and lecture buildings, the second phase on residential facilities for students and staff, and the final third phase on expanding research and educational facilities.

By February next year, ahead of the opening, the city plans to complete the core facilities such as administrative and lecture buildings to welcome the first batch of new students.
