Korea's First Space SF 'The Silent Sea' Ranks 7th Globally on Netflix

[Asia Economy Reporter Cha Min-young] Netflix's new Korean original series The Silent Sea ranked 7th in the global rankings immediately after its release. Although it attracted less explosive attention compared to previous works, it was positively evaluated for securing 5th place in the North American region, including Canada and the United States.

According to the online content service ranking site 'FlixPatrol' on the 26th, The Silent Sea ranked 7th worldwide in the Netflix TV program category as of the previous day. FlixPatrol reflects 24-hour viewership ratings by category for each platform.

The Silent Sea is Korea's first space sci-fi series, depicting the story of elite members on a special mission who depart for an abandoned research base on the moon in the near future Earth devastated by the depletion of essential resources. Actors Bae Doona, Gong Yoo, Kim Sun-young, and Lee Joon participated, and Jung Woo-sung took charge of overall production as a producer rather than an actor.

Looking at the rankings by country, it ranked 1st in Korea, but the highest overseas ranking was 3rd in Singapore and Thailand, 4th in Hong Kong, Indonesia, and Vietnam, and 5th in Canada, the United States, the Czech Republic, and Malaysia. Compared to Hellbound, which ranked 1st immediately after its release as a follow-up to Squid Game, it attracted less explosive attention but recorded high rankings in North America, including Canada and the United States.

The Silent Sea is based on director Choi Hang-yong's short film of the same name. Writer Park Eun-kyo expanded the original short film into eight episodes. Director Choi Hang-yong said at an online production presentation, "I wanted to use the moon as a setting, which had not been much explored at the time. I made it with the thought of really doing what I wanted to do," adding, "It is not simply a story about the survival of the crew members but expanded into the theme of the survival of Earth and humanity, allowing it to deliver greater meaning and concerns."
