Public Transportation Reorganized, Improved Commuting and School Transportation Convenience
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] With the opening of the second phase of the Korail Donghae Line, the metropolitan railway connecting Ulsan and Busan within a one-hour living zone will be expanded.
The second phase of the Donghae Line, opening on the 28th, covers the Busan Bujeon-Ilgwang-Ulsan Taehwagang section. The metropolitan railway currently operating from Busan Bujeon to Ilgwang will now run all the way to Ulsan Taehwagang Station.
The travel time between Ulsan Taehwagang Station and Busan Bujeon Station is 76 minutes.
Starting with the first train departing from Namchang Station at 5:24 AM on the 28th (the first train from Taehwagang Station departs at 5:36 AM), trains will run at 15-minute intervals during rush hours and 25-minute intervals during regular hours, with 102 trips on weekdays and 92 trips on weekends and holidays. Some trains will operate only on the Namchang-Bujeon section (13 trips on weekdays, 6 trips on weekends and holidays).
The fare for the metropolitan railway is set between 1,300 KRW and 2,500 KRW (adult, based on transportation card).
Fares by section, based on Taehwagang Station, are 1,300 KRW to Deokha Station, 1,500 KRW to Namchang Station, 1,700 KRW to Wolnae Station, 1,900 KRW to Ilgwang Station, 2,100 KRW to Songjeong Station, 2,300 KRW to Wondong Station, and 2,500 KRW to Bujeon Station.
The Mugunghwa train, which used to run from Taehwagang Station via Hogye Station to Gyeongju, will now run from Taehwagang Station via Buk-Ulsan Station to Singyeongju Station with this opening.
Ulsan City views this metropolitan railway opening as an opportunity to reform the public transportation system centered on city buses and plans to establish a city bus transfer system centered around the stations in line with the metropolitan railway opening.
An official from Ulsan City said, “Connecting Busan and Ulsan within an hour has made commuting for workers and students more convenient, and it has also facilitated the establishment of a joint living area for the Southeast Mega City formation.”
He added, “In the future, with the metropolitan railway extended to ‘Buk-Ulsan Station’ and the construction of trams within the city center, the convenience of using public transportation is expected to increase significantly.”
