[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heung-soon] The Ministry of Environment announced on the 23rd that it has submitted the '2030 National Greenhouse Gas Reduction Target (NDC),' which raises the goal to reduce national greenhouse gas emissions by 40% compared to 2018 by 2030, to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Secretariat.
Earlier, the government finalized a plan in the Cabinet meeting last October to increase the greenhouse gas emission reduction target for 2030 from 26.3% to 40% (436 million tons) compared to 2018. Through this, it plans to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, with net emissions reaching '0.'
The submission to the UNFCCC Secretariat included the NDC implementation plan and implementation system, along with annexed information necessary to enhance clarity, transparency, and understanding in accordance with the Paris Agreement on Climate Change.
Minister of Environment Han Jeong-ae stated, "The 2030 NDC is an interim goal for achieving carbon neutrality. To achieve the NDC, the government will focus its policy capabilities and wholeheartedly support carbon neutrality across all sectors of society."
