[Suncheon=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] Suncheon City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Heo Seok) announced on the 23rd that it has enhanced its status as a leading local government in urban regeneration by winning awards in three categories of this year’s urban regeneration projects.

Suncheon City was selected as an excellent institution at the ▲National Policy Goal Implementation Contest hosted by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, and also won the ▲Excellence Award in Job Creation through Urban Regeneration and the ▲Excellence Award in Regional Revitalization through Urban Regeneration at the Urban Regeneration Festival jointly hosted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, Chungbuk Province, and Cheongju City.

At this year’s National Policy Goal Implementation Contest, Suncheon was recognized as an excellent institution for being the first nationwide to create a safe and secure school commuting route and an ecological playground through the specialized school regeneration project at Suncheon Nam Elementary School, and for revitalizing the old downtown by utilizing the school’s idle spaces to create community and educational spaces for local residents.

Additionally, at the Urban Regeneration Festival held on the 17th in Cheongju, Chungbuk Province, Suncheon was selected as an excellent case of resident-led urban regeneration projects and regional economic revitalization with the Station Area Residents’ Council’s Singsing Saengsaeng Festival and the Cheongsujeong Village Cafe and Workshop.

The Singsing Saengsaeng Festival received positive evaluations in the regional revitalization category as a resident-driven urban regeneration project where station area residents directly planned and operated the festival through a resident proposal contest after completing the advanced course of the Station Area Festival Planning School this year, with local merchants forming the foundation.

The operation of the Cheongsujeong Village Cafe and Workshop, created through the urban-type Saetteul Village Project, was highly evaluated for contributing to the local community and economic revitalization, winning the Excellence Award in the job creation category.

Mayor Heo Seok of Suncheon said, “This award is the result of the combined efforts of residents and administration for the success of Suncheon’s urban regeneration projects,” and added, “We will continue to do our best so that Suncheon can play a leading role in the field of urban regeneration.”
