A Man in His 60s Gave Sleeping Pill-Laced Jujube Tea to an Elderly Person in Their 80s and Stole Precious Metals

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Jucheol In] On the 20th, the Gimhae Jungbu Police Station in Gyeongnam announced that they have arrested a woman, A (66), on charges of robbery and injury for giving an elderly person tea containing sleeping pills and stealing valuables.

In June of last year, A approached an elderly woman B (80), who was passing by on a road in Seosang-dong, Gimhae-si, Gyeongnam, pretending to visit a famous fortune-telling house. Instead of going to the fortune-telling house, B suggested attending church and offered to give A a Bible from her home, leading A to her house.

At B's house, A requested and drank jujube tea while secretly putting zolpidem, a sleeping pill, into B's cup. Zolpidem is a psychotropic drug (narcotic) that can only be purchased with a doctor's prescription and is used as a sleep inducer.

After B lost consciousness and collapsed, A searched the house and stole a gold watch worth about 4 million won from the dressing table before fleeing. The police, in cooperation with the Geumjeong Police Station in Busan, arrested A after about six months.

The police are conducting further investigations to determine whether A has stolen valuables using similar methods before.
