Seoul City Saves 490 Million KRW in Energy Bills for Eco-Friendly Apartments... 24 Complexes Selected

[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Seoul Metropolitan Government held the 'Eco-friendly Practice Excellent Apartment Selection Contest' to promote energy saving and the spread of eco-friendly practice culture in multi-family housing, selecting and announcing 24 outstanding complexes.

On the 20th, Seoul City announced that it held an online awards ceremony on the 16th at 'Seoul Smart Energy-B' within the metaverse (Gather Town). About 100 people, including representatives and residents of the 24 awarded apartment complexes, attended the event, where they presented and shared excellent activity cases by apartment. Despite a 7.6% increase in residential electricity usage (as of August) compared to last year due to prolonged COVID-19 leading to more time spent at home, the awarded apartments reduced energy consumption through the efforts of residents and management offices.

Analysis of the apartments under review showed that energy usage until August this year decreased by 2,357 MWh of electricity and 104,859 cubic meters of water compared to the same period last year. This is equivalent to reducing 1,117 tons of greenhouse gases, which translates to approximately 490 million KRW in monetary value.

This contest comprehensively evaluated energy saving, production and efficiency achievements, and eco-friendly practices such as waste reduction within the complexes to select outstanding apartments. ‘Sangam World Cup Complex 8’ and ‘Yangpyeong Sangnok-su Apartment’ won the grand prize, each receiving 10 million KRW.

The highly rated apartment complexes commonly installed high-efficiency LED lighting in shared spaces such as hallways, streetlights, and underground parking lots. Additionally, recycling bins were separated into 11 categories according to regulations, and they actively promoted energy saving and proper waste separation methods to residents.

Lee In-geun, Director of Environmental Energy Planning at Seoul City, said, “The Eco-friendly Practice Excellent Apartment Selection Contest targeting multi-family housing has resulted in a significant reduction of greenhouse gases in apartment complexes,” adding, “We will work to spread the culture of eco-friendly apartments that contribute to the economy by reducing energy costs amid the global high oil price situation.”
