Searching for Ways to Utilize 15,000 North Korean Music Archives 1955 Pyongyang Gut Ritual Materials


On the 22nd at 2 PM, the National Gugak Center announced on the 19th that it will live stream an international academic conference on the topic of "Current Utilization and Prospects of North Korean Music Materials" via its YouTube channel. The conference will share the current utilization status of approximately 15,000 North Korean music research and collection materials held by the National Gugak Center and discuss future joint research plans. Cheon Hyun-sik, a research curator at the National Namdo Gugak Center, will introduce the National Gugak Center's North Korean music projects and material status; Kim Kwang-woon, a visiting distinguished professor at Gyeongnam National University, will present on the collection and utilization status of North Korean materials; and Yang Jong-seung, director of the Shamanism Museum, will introduce North Korea's intangible cultural heritage designated by Korea and related materials. Professor Sydney Hutchison from Humboldt University in Germany will present on the music of divided Germany crossing borders; Mikhail Per, director of the World Music Center at Hildesheim University, will discuss music beyond borders; and Professor Keith Howard from the University of London will give a presentation on Korean music and Korean arts from 1955 to 1968. The subsequent discussion will exchange opinions on access to and utilization of North Korean music materials domestically and internationally.

At this academic conference, there will also be a photo appreciation session focusing on a 1955 Pyongyang gut (shamanistic ritual). Seo In-hwa, head of the Gugak Research Office at the National Gugak Center, will introduce how the 1955 Pyongyang gut audio and photos were obtained, and Hong Tae-han, research professor at Jeonbuk National University; Kim In-sook, professor at the Academy of Korean Studies; and Choi Jin-ah, professor at Hanyang University, will each explain these materials from literary, musical, and anthropological perspectives respectively.
