[Naju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yukbong] Naju City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Kang In-gyu) was selected as the only excellent local government in the province in the ‘2021 Child Abuse Public Response System Operation Establishment Evaluation’ hosted by the Ministry of Health and Welfare.
According to the city on the 17th, this evaluation is a system in which the Ministry of Health and Welfare measures the performance of establishing a public response system to strengthen the public responsibility for child abuse prevention targeting local governments and selects excellent local governments.
The Ministry of Health and Welfare evaluated 7 items in 4 areas including ‘placement and support of child abuse dedicated public officials,’ ‘separation protection and recovery support for abused children,’ ‘establishment of cooperation system with related organizations,’ and ‘excellent cases,’ awarding 2 cities and provinces nationwide with outstanding performance and 6 cities, counties, and districts including Naju City.
In accordance with the revision of the Child Welfare Act, which focuses on the implementation of the public restructuring of the child abuse response system, one of the 10 core tasks of the national agenda ‘Inclusive State Child Policy,’ the city established a dedicated department, the Child Protection Team, in October last year.
The city was highly evaluated for various efforts such as early stabilization of the restructured system following the placement of dedicated public officials in the Child Protection Team, support for recovery of abused families, and proactive prevention of child abuse through collaboration and cooperation with private organizations.
In particular, it attracted attention by signing a business agreement in March with National Naju Hospital, Naju General Hospital, and Bitgaram General Hospital to designate the first dedicated medical institutions for child abuse in the province.
The dedicated medical institutions supported prompt medical measures for abused children, physical and mental examinations and checkups, contributing to the establishment of a detailed child care network.
The city focused on child abuse prevention education and promotion by conducting ‘Special Prevention Education for Child Abuse’ targeting directors of local daycare centers, and promotional campaigns with related organizations such as the police station, education support office, and child protection specialized agencies.
Also, operating as a ‘Child Abuse Intensive Promotion Period,’ the city worked hard to spread awareness of child abuse prevention through the ‘STOP! Child Abuse’ pledge relay involving daycare centers, local children’s centers, childcare facilities, and elementary schools, as well as sending mobile notification letters.
A city official said, “We are grateful for the active cooperation of related organizations for the stable establishment of the public response system for child abuse, along with being selected as the only excellent local government in the province. We will continue to do our best to prevent child abuse in advance, establish a prompt protection system, and promote prevention projects so that local children can grow up healthy in a safe environment.”
