'Galaxy S22' Scheduled for Release in February Next Year
Top-tier 'Ultra' Model Transitions to 'Note'
[Asia Economy Reporter Eunmo Koo] The 'Galaxy Note,' which had been rumored to be discontinued, is making a comeback by merging with the 'Galaxy S' series.
According to industry sources on the 17th, it is expected that the top-tier model of the S22, which Samsung Electronics is anticipated to unveil in February next year, will be named 'Note' instead of the previous 'Ultra.' Until now, the Galaxy S series has been released in three variants: standard, Plus, and Ultra, but this time, the model name will feature 'Note' instead of 'Ultra.'
Recently, Samsung Electronics lowered the retail price of the previous model, the 'Galaxy Note20 Ultra,' released last August, which also supports the revival of the Note series. On the 15th, the three major mobile carriers reduced the Note20 Ultra's price from 1,452,000 KRW to 1,254,000 KRW. This price reduction is interpreted as part of clearing out old stock before the launch of the new Note model.
The Note series has been subject to continuous discontinuation rumors this year. The Note series, featuring a large screen and a built-in S Pen for handwriting, has been very popular for over a decade since its first release in 2011. However, as large screens became common in smartphones and other S Pen-compatible devices appeared besides the Note, discontinuation rumors surfaced. This year, Samsung focused on its third-generation foldable phones released in the second half of the year, and no new Note models were launched. As discontinuation seemed inevitable, dissatisfaction arose mainly among Note fans, and overseas petitions appeared expressing the desire to see new Note products again.
In this situation, Samsung Electronics is believed to have chosen to integrate the Note into the Galaxy S series as a way to simplify its flagship lineup while minimizing the loss of existing customers. If the Note is integrated into the Galaxy S series, Samsung is expected to preserve the identity and customer base of the Note series while streamlining its flagship lineup into foldable phones and the Galaxy S series.
