Magnitude 3.2 Earthquake in Jeju Seogwipo Waters... Total of 18 Aftershocks Occurred (Comprehensive)


[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] An additional magnitude 3.2 earthquake occurred in the sea area southwest of Seogwipo, Jeju. It is an aftershock of the magnitude 4.9 earthquake that occurred on the 14th.


The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) announced on the 17th that at 6:22:10 AM, a magnitude 3.2 earthquake occurred 38 km southwest of Seogwipo City, Jeju. The epicenter is located at 33.12 degrees north latitude and 126.18 degrees east longitude, with a depth of 18 km.


The instrumental intensity was 3 in Jeju and 2 in Jeonnam. Intensity 3 means that people indoors, especially those on upper floors of buildings, feel it noticeably, and stationary cars shake slightly. The KMA stated, "People in the vicinity of the earthquake are likely to feel the seismic shaking, so please pay attention to safety."


As of 6:30 AM that day, a total of 2 reports of felt earthquakes were received from Jeju.


So far, a total of 18 aftershocks have occurred. This earthquake is the largest among the aftershocks. The second largest aftershock was a magnitude 2.8 earthquake that occurred around 3:06 PM on the 15th. Other aftershocks ranged from magnitude 1.3 to 1.8.


Aftershocks are expected to continue for several months. In Gyeongju, 188 aftershocks occurred, and in Pohang, 100 aftershocks were recorded.

As of 11 AM the previous day, a total of 16 damage reports had been received. The most common report was cracks on walls, with 8 cases, followed by 5 cases of cracked bathroom tiles, and reports of water leaks from residential water pipes, roof finishing materials falling off, and cracked glass windows.
