[Asia Economy Reporter Yoon Seul-gi] An exhibition of Henri ?mile-Benoit Matisse (1869-1954), a representative French artist known as "A painter of bonheur," will be held from the 21st until April 10 of next year at the Hangaram Art Museum in Seoul Arts Center.
Following the exhibitions "The Ecstasy of Color - Marie Laurencin" and "Magnum in Paris," this third French Artist Series by Gaudium Associates is designed to provide a multidimensional perspective on Henri Matisse's life and works through original pieces as well as videos, photographs, and various interactive experiences. Featuring over 200 works including drawings, prints, illustrations, and art books, this exhibition boasts the largest number of original works ever shown in a solo Henri Matisse exhibition in Korea.
Henri Matisse was not only the "founder of Fauvism" but also the "alchemist of line," creating bold yet simple and beautiful lines and forms through drawings and prints. Moreover, through cut-outs that transcended genre boundaries, pioneering art book designs, and illustrations, he became a graphic artist who profoundly influenced 20th-century graphic art, leaving a significant impact on modernist design and graphic arts today.
This exhibition comprehensively highlights Henri Matisse's legacy in illustration and graphic art, which have emerged as the most important art genres in the 21st century, through his art book works. Matisse was not only a great painter but also a master of graphic art born in the 20th century. From prints and illustrations to book design and textile designs such as carpets, he achieved remarkable accomplishments across various genres and continues to exert a great influence on contemporary graphic design. Meanwhile, this exhibition was jointly planned by the cultural content specialist company Gaudium Associates, KBS Media, and Dong-A Ilbo.
