164 Billion KRW Invested to Accelerate Establishment of 5G Network-Based Drone Manufacturing Demonstration Platform
[Goheung=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Shim Jeong-woo] Goheung County, Jeollanam-do (Governor Song Gwi-geun) announced on the 14th that it has begun construction of the Drone Commercialization Demonstration Support Center, a core project of the "5G-based Drone Utilization Smart Farming Demonstration and Expansion Project," which was selected as a Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy public contest project on the 3rd.
The 5G-based Drone Utilization Smart Farming Demonstration and Expansion Project is led by Jeonnam Technopark and is a four-year plan from 2020 to 2023, investing 16.4 billion KRW (8 billion KRW national funds, 3.2 billion KRW provincial funds, 4.8 billion KRW county funds, 400 million KRW private funds) in the Goheung Aviation Center area to establish unmanned drone operation system facilities and drone performance evaluation equipment based on 5G communication.
Among them, the Drone Commercialization Demonstration Support Center will have a total floor area of 1,180 square meters and will be equipped with an external wind control test device, a saline environment chamber, a drone GPS and sensor verification simulator, a space for building carbon 3D printers, and an Open-Lab/Pilot room. It will be a one-stop space for the design, testing and evaluation, and manufacturing of drones based on 5G frequencies.
In addition, as a linked project with the construction of the Drone Commercialization Demonstration Support Center, the Goheung Drone Center, completed in August this year, will be equipped with an integrated drone control system, 3D and multi-channel big data systems, drone LiDAR, hyperspectral cameras, thermal imaging cameras, multispectral cameras, and an unmanned charging station (on the 4th floor rooftop).
The nation’s only dedicated 5G network for drones is also scheduled to be established by next year, enabling a "farming-type big data system" that can store and process farming data and image processing information collected in real time by 5G communication-based drones in cultivation areas of rice, garlic, onions, yuzu, and other agricultural products. This is expected to be the first step in building a "year-round smart farming platform" utilizing 5G-based drones.
A county official said, "With the promotion of the '5G-based Drone Utilization Smart Farming Demonstration and Expansion Project' together with Jeollanam-do and Jeonnam Technopark, once the 5G-based drone manufacturing demonstration infrastructure is established, it will create great synergy with existing drone industry infrastructure such as the Goheung Drone Center, and we are confident that Goheung will stand tall as the undisputed center of the drone industry in Korea."
