689 More Cases Compared to the Same Time the Previous Day

[Asia Economy Reporter Gong Byung-sun] As of 9 PM on the 9th, the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases recorded the highest ever for the same time. Consequently, the number of new confirmed cases is expected to exceed 7,000, potentially setting a new record.

According to the quarantine authorities, Seoul city, and other local governments, from 12 AM to 9 PM on that day, a total of 5,803 confirmed COVID-19 cases were reported across 17 cities and provinces nationwide. This is the largest number recorded based on the 9 PM interim tally. The previous highest record at 9 PM was 5,704 cases on the 7th. This surpasses the previous record for the same time slot in just two days.

The number of confirmed cases on this day is 689 more than the 5,114 cases reported at 9 PM the previous day. Compared to the same time a week ago on the 2nd, when there were 4,057 cases, it has increased by 1,746.

It is expected that by 12 AM, when the tally is finalized, the number of confirmed cases will increase further to the 7,000 range. If so, this will mark the third consecutive day with new confirmed cases in the 7,000s. The current highest daily confirmed case record is 7,174 cases reported the previous day.

The number of new confirmed cases in the metropolitan area was 4,233 (72.9%), while non-metropolitan areas recorded 1,570 cases (27.1%). By city and province, the numbers are as follows: Seoul 2,428, Gyeonggi 1,350, Incheon 455, Busan 283, Gyeongbuk 183, Chungnam 159, Gyeongnam 156, Daegu 154, Gangwon 149, Daejeon 143, Jeonbuk 81, Chungbuk 80, Jeonnam 59, Jeju 47, Gwangju 35, Ulsan 31, and Sejong 10. Confirmed cases were reported in all 17 cities and provinces.

The number of new confirmed cases over the past week (from the 3rd to the 9th) were 4,944 → 5,352 → 5,126 → 4,324 → 4,954 → 7,174 → 7,102 respectively. The weekly daily average number of confirmed cases is 5,568. Excluding imported cases, the average daily number of locally transmitted confirmed cases was 5,542.
