[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Jun-kyung] The Jeonnam Provincial Council announced on the 9th that the partial amendment ordinance on the payment of scholarships for children of volunteer firefighters in Jeonnam Province, proposed by Assemblyman Yoo Seong-su (Democratic Party··Jangseong 1), passed the standing committee on the 9th.

This amendment includes expanding the scholarship payment target from children of volunteer firefighters to university student volunteer firefighters, as high school free education is fully implemented this year, resulting in children of volunteer firefighters in high school no longer receiving scholarships.

Accordingly, not only the university student children of volunteer firefighters who have previously received scholarships but also university student volunteer firefighters will be eligible to receive scholarships.

Assemblyman Yoo Seong-su said, “There is concern about the weakening of the auxiliary role in firefighting duties due to the decrease and aging of volunteer firefighters,” and added, “I hope this ordinance amendment will increase the number of university students supported as volunteer firefighters, serving as an opportunity for the further development and revitalization of the volunteer firefighting corps.”

Assemblyman Yoo, who served as the chairman of the Education Committee of the Jeonnam Provincial Council, enacted the ‘Jeonnam Provincial Office of Education Remote Class Activation Ordinance’ and amended the ‘Jeonnam Province Ordinance on Strengthening and Supporting the Competitiveness of Small Business Owners’ and the ‘Jeonnam Province Ordinance on Fostering and Supporting Subtropical Agriculture’ to strengthen the social safety net for small business owners and respond to the climate crisis in the agricultural sector.
