Damyang-gun Promotes Trial Excavation Survey of Gwanbangjaerim Embankment Cross-Section

Part of Nationally Designated Cultural Heritage Restoration and Maintenance... Systematic Preservation and Management, Reappraisal of Historical Value

Damyang-gun Promotes Trial Excavation Survey of Gwanbangjaerim Embankment Cross-Section

[Damyang=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] On the 9th, Damyang County in Jeollanam-do announced that it will conduct a cross-section trial excavation survey of the Damyang Gwanbangjerim (Natural Monument No. 366) embankment in cooperation with the Cultural Heritage Administration.

This survey is being carried out as part of the 2021 national designated cultural heritage restoration and maintenance project to reexamine the historical value of Gwanbangjerim and to promote systematic cultural heritage preservation and management in the future.

Before the trial excavation, the survey section was set after consulting with tree experts to prevent damage to the protected trees within Gwanbangjerim, and during the excavation, efforts will be focused on preserving the current state of the cultural heritage while conducting the investigation.

The county and the Cultural Heritage Administration aim to identify and record the status and construction methods of the embankment by understanding whether natural embankments existed before the construction of the embankment and the formation process through the survey.

To minimize inconvenience to tourists caused by the trial excavation, the county plans to provide detour guidance and assign on-site managers, and after completion, it will review the safety of the embankment and establish a restoration plan that meets river design standards to restore the embankment to its original state.

Meanwhile, Gwanbangjerim is an artificial embankment and artificial forest created on the northern embankment of Damyangcheon, which flows around Damyang-eup. It was constructed during the Joseon Dynasty to prevent flood damage and was designated as a natural monument in 1991 as a historical and cultural resource embodying the wisdom of ancestors who managed the waterway of the upper Yeongsan River.
