[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Seryeong] Geoje City, Gyeongnam Province, has decided to completely cancel this year's Jangseungpo Port Year-end Fireworks Festival.
The Jangseungpo Port Year-end Fireworks Festival was first held in 2011 to commemorate the 1st anniversary of the opening of the Geoga Bridge and has been held every December 31 since then.
It is Geoje's representative festival to see off the old year and welcome the new year, featuring fireworks shows, traditional game experience yards, cultural and artistic performances, cultural experience activities, specialty product sales, and food markets.
Although a phased return to normal life has recently been underway, Geoje City judged that it would be difficult to hold a large-scale festival event due to the rapid increase in COVID-19 cases and the spread of variant viruses.
The Year-end Fireworks Festival attracts tourists not only from Geoje citizens but also from other regions such as the metropolitan area, making it difficult to prevent the spread of infection and risking the collapse of the quarantine system, leading to this decision.
A city official said, "It is regrettable that we cannot hold the festival again this year following last year," and added, "Protecting the safety of citizens and tourists from COVID-19 and the Omicron variant virus is our top priority."
