Geochang-gun Launches Intensive Crackdown on Illegal Kitchen Waste Disposers, Main Cause of Sewer Pipe Blockages Geochang County Office building exterior view

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Soon-kyung] Geochang-gun, Gyeongnam announced on the 8th that it will conduct guidance and crackdowns to prevent damage such as sewer pipe blockages and backflow caused by the illegal sale and use of kitchen waste disposers.

Products without certification marks from the Korea Water and Wastewater Works Association, non-integrated products, and products that discharge more than 20% of ground food waste are all prohibited from being sold or used illegally.

If illegal products are used, indoor drainage pipes can become blocked, causing sewage to backflow into homes and generate foul odors. Excessive inflow of pollutants can disrupt the operation of public sewage treatment facilities or pollute rivers. To prevent such damage in advance, the county also conducts activities such as installing posters and distributing promotional materials in each eup and myeon.

After this intensive guidance and crackdown period, the county plans to carry out year-round publicity and crackdowns to ensure the smooth maintenance of sewage facilities.

Additionally, those who sell illegal kitchen waste disposers will be subject to imprisonment of up to 2 years or a fine of up to 20 million won under the Sewerage Act, and those who use illegal products will be fined up to 1 million won.
