Silla University Awards Honorary Doctorate in Public Administration to Shin Sang-hae, Chairman of Busan City Council

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters, Trainee Reporter Hwang Duyul] Silla University awarded an honorary Doctorate in Public Administration to Shin Sang-hae, Chairman of the Busan Metropolitan Council, on the 7th.

Chairman Shin graduated from the Department of Business Administration at Silla University, completed a master's degree in Urban Planning at Busan National University Graduate School, and finished doctoral coursework in Political Science and Diplomacy at Pukyong National University Graduate School.

He entered politics in 2006 as a member of the 5th Busan Metropolitan Council, was re-elected in 2018 as a member of the 8th Busan Metropolitan Council, and is currently serving as the Chairman of the Busan Metropolitan Council.

In 2009, Chairman Shin proposed the nation’s first “Ordinance to Support the Revitalization of Aging Industrial Areas,” laying the foundation for transforming the Sasang and Geumsa industrial areas into advanced industrial complexes.

He was also involved in the establishment of the Sasang Cultural Center and Sasang Danurim Center, the ecological restoration project of Hakjangcheon Stream, and the installation of the Samrak Overpass connecting Renecite and Samrak Riverside Park.

Chairman Shin helped secure the Happy Housing project for youth, promoted the construction of the Western Busan Government Complex, supported the Sasang Industrial Complex Imagination Hub project, and attracted the Elastic Materials Research Institute to the Samrak area.

Additionally, he led the enactment of the “Gadeok New Airport Special Act” to realize the long-cherished wish of local residents for the construction of Gadeok New Airport, and is actively engaged in city administration activities such as attracting the 2030 Busan World Expo, redevelopment of the North Port, and the creation of the Busan-Ulsan-Gyeongnam Mega City.

The Silla University Graduate Committee judged Chairman Shin’s spirit of local love and achievements to be outstanding and decided to award him the honorary Doctorate in Public Administration.

Silla University President Kim Choong-seok said, “Following the example of the Chairman, Silla University will grow into a specialized university representing Busan in the era of future promising industries.”

Following the degree conferral ceremony, Chairman Shin gave a commemorative lecture titled “The Dream of Nakdong, Promising the Tomorrow of the Western Busan Era.”
