Developed 'Seamless Handover' and Obtained 'EasyMesh R2' Certification
New Features Available Including Automatic Channel Switching to Avoid Interference with Neighboring Wireless Routers
WiFi 6E Router Supporting 6GHz Band Also Successfully Demonstrated
[Asia Economy Reporter Eunmo Koo] LG Uplus announced on the 7th that it has upgraded three types of ‘Giga WiFi 6’ routers to enable uninterrupted WiFi usage in various environments anywhere inside the home.
Earlier, LG Uplus launched a Giga WiFi 6 router in February that supports ‘Mesh Mode,’ which extends WiFi signals. When used alone, the Giga WiFi 6 can function like a regular wireless router, but installing multiple units throughout the home significantly expands the coverage area of the signal.
LG Uplus applied the ‘Seamless handover’ feature to the Giga WiFi 6 to improve occasional WiFi quality degradation and enable handover between multiple wireless routers, similar to 5G and LTE mobile communications. A distinctive feature is that the wireless routers lead the operation of the handover.
The seamless handover maintains connection without traffic interruption when a device moves between multiple wireless routers, enhancing the video viewing experience. For example, customers watching the home wireless IPTV ‘U+tv Free’ can enjoy videos anywhere in the house without experiencing image degradation or frame freezing, maintaining consistent quality.
Prior to this upgrade, LG Uplus obtained EasyMesh R2 certification from the WiFi Alliance, an international standardization organization, to ensure compatibility with products made by domestic and international wireless router manufacturers. Additionally, the ‘Channel Switch Automatic (CSA)’ feature, which automatically adjusts assigned frequencies to avoid interference with neighbors’ wireless routers in apartment complexes and other multi-unit housing, was also upgraded. These new features are available to all customers using Giga WiFi 6 after performing a firmware update.
Meanwhile, LG Uplus has developed a prototype of a WiFi 6E router that uses the 6 GHz band along with the existing 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands to improve WiFi quality, and has completed technical verification. The WiFi 6E router is targeted for commercialization next year.
Song Daewon, Head of LG Uplus Home Service Development Lab, said, “With the expansion of remote work, customer expectations for WiFi quality are increasing. This time, by updating features such as router-led handover, we have secured unparalleled WiFi quality. We will continue to improve home WiFi quality going forward.”
